La Leche League of Greater San Jose, California

The newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three. — Dr. Grantly Dick-Read

More Information

Why choose breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding is the natural source of nourishment and security for your baby. Human milk is important for your baby's health, growth, and development. Breastfeeding is convenient and will save you time, effort and money. By choosing to breastfeed, you are preserving our environment, reducing health care costs and saving precious resources.

How do you learn to breastfeed?
Breastfeeding a baby is a natural process, but you may need information and support as you and your baby learn how.

Where can you learn about breastfeeding?
You will find up-to-date information, encouragement and mother-to-mother support at La Leche League's monthly Series Meetings, informal discussions about the practical, physical and psychological aspects of breastfeeding. The meetings are conducted by La Leche League Leaders, volunteers who have happily breastfed their own children and are accredited by La Leche League International. Our meetings are open to all women interested in breastfeeding and nurturing their children. Scheduled meeting topics include:

  • The Advantages of Breastfeeding to Mother and Baby
  • The Baby Arrives: The Family and the Breastfed Baby
  • The Art of Breastfeeding and Avoiding Difficulties
  • Nutrition and Weaning

The ideal time to begin attending meetings is during pregnancy because the information you receive may help you recognize and avoid potential difficulties when your baby arrives. Babies and toddlers are always welcome at LLL meetings. Fathers are welcome at some meetings: please check with your local Leader.
